Reading Reflection 8-21-2023

My experience with English classes at school got off to a rocky start. I was fully virtual my freshmen year, so I was always to scared to speak up and ask questions and I never felt like doing the work. But when I hit sophomore year I was in person in a building that was completely unfamiliar to me with people I didn't know that well. But I adjusted and started taking my classes more seriously and doing the work. I had an actual relationship with my teacher so I wasn't afraid to ask for help. I understood everything I was being taught, and I have friends in the class, which made it less embarrassing to ask questions in front of the class. Junior year I was completely ready for everything I would have to do. I studied hard, got the work done, and always asked for help when it was needed.

I didn't really like reading books when I was younger, until my 5th grade teacher selected 6 students to be apart of a book club run by an associate of the school. Once I joined that club and got used to how the club worked, I liked it. I got to talk about the interesting stories we read, and even do some fun activities along the way. This motivation stayed with me, especially in 7th grade, when my English teacher had our whole class split into groups for book club. We had an interesting group of people who almost always read the chapters of each story, and we even got to name our groups. One of my best friends A'yanna was in my book club and one day she shouted out "Adam's Toe" and somehow that became our book club group's name. But all of my motivation for reading books went away in 9th grade, when it felt like there were better things to be doing. Thankfully that motivation has come back to me, especially when I think about my grades.

I hope to pick up new and better study habits for reading books, learn new techniques to memorize exactly what happens in each book, and even be able to sort out each event that occurs in each chapter. I also hope to get better at writing papers on books, because I know that will help me even more with my English class. The best I could hope for with this class is to gain more knowledge on these books, and possibly even the writers.

  4. Adam, I like the thread you have about how the environment and the relationships are so important to whether or not reading is enjoyable. Hopefully, our class becomes a nice little book club that also has a positive effect on your reading experience.
